AFAICT, vu_collect() can still return a "short buffer", if it hits
max_elem. We should check for that case and bail out, shouldn't we?

Much of the above duplicates tcp_vu_prepare(). Any chance you could
call into it instead?

You can calculate the frame size to update iov_len more easily than
this. Because you already calculated hdrlen, it's just (hdrlen + optlen).

Here too, you need to check for a short buffer, no?
I think you also need to update flags_elem[1].in_sg[0].iov_len to
match flags_elem[0].in_sg[0].iov_len.

Like the earlier pcap_iov(), this should have the
virtio_net_hdr_mrg_rxbuf offset, shouldn't it?

I'd suggest a different variable for this quantity, since it's the
segment size, rather than the frame size. Actually... altering mss
above is also potentially confusing, since it's no longer the
*maximum* segment size, just *this* segment size.
So maybe it would be clearer to leave mss and frame_size untouched,
set segment_size = min(mss, fillsize, frame_size - hdrlen) then use
that for the remainder.
> + iov = &elem[elem_cnt].in_sg[0];

I understand why you're adjusting the IOV here, and I can't see a
better way to do it. However, I don't love the fact that we adjust it
one way here, but adjust it back somewhere quite distant, which makes
it hard to know which state the vector is in at any point. Is there
any way you could make the adjustment to only covering the data
segments local to this function - essentially just around the
recvmsg() which is the only thing working with the reduced version?

recvmsg(), and therefore this function, returns different values
depending on peek_offset_cap (it will or won't include already_sent in
the value). I believe you correct for this in the caller, but it
seems like it would be clearer if you did that adjustment here, so
this returns a value with consistent meaning.

I know it's a little fiddly because you have to change the v4/v6
checking, but this needs to go before you touch anything in the frame.
It would make sense immediately after the comment above that describes
the assumption this is testing.

Probably just a debug level for this one. There are some cases where
we could get unsolicited traffic before the guest connects to passt.
I think discussion in our last couple of meetings came to the
conclusion that for the bulk of the passt code we should consider the
link to be always logically present, but treat it as a black hole if
the guest hasn't connected.

Is this checking the errno from tcp_vu_sock_recv()? If so, it's not
obvious from here that vu_queue_rewind() can't clobber it (and that's
a fragile assumption, even if it's true now). Better to save errno
immediately after the function you're getting it from.

Every use of 'i' below is as 'i + 1', so it's probably easier to make

This logic is pretty subtle. I wonder if it would be worth keeping a
parallel array which explicitly tracks which buffers / elems are frame
boundaries instead.

This isn't a great function name, since it's not initialising the
socket in any meaningful way.

Since you're already PEEKing the socket, I wonder if you could use
that to avoid having to collect a maximum size buffer every time,
instead using the actual size of the next packet. Eh.. that can be a
later refinement.

This change implies a change in the interface of vu_set_watch() that
doesn't appear to have happened in this patch. Seems like this fix
should be folded into the earlier patch introducing vu_set_watch().
